The Second of Fukushima in July ③

Bon season have ended. It rained after a long time.
After that, the heat wave will be over and fall will come.
I can smell earthy wind from the window.
It reminds me the smell of my dad's field in Fukushima.

Dad's organic field.

Green beans

The way that he leads the growing vines with
whatever he can find, is seemed to be wonder for the neighbors
who are agricultural professionals and use right farm tools.
They say to him, " You do funny things agian."
Everybody pass by his field have a pleasant chat with my father.

A little green pepper

It's very small but strong taste.

Perfect Pumpkin

We cooked it Amani (candied pumpkin), Tenpura, and salad.
It was very nice.

Red perilla

My sister usually makes red perilla juce,
but this summer, she couldn't.
Oh, I wanted to drink it.

At father's request, I planted them.

And dug garlic.

Many...like this.

A lot of ume (Japanese apricot) grew this year, too.

My parents make umeboshi (ume pickles) every year.
It's gen-en (low-salt) and deliciously sour.
We don't buy over-the-counter umeboshi.
My aunt and my big sister's family love the parents' umeboshi.
The other day, they had phone calls from both
to tell them, " We've ate already all. Please send new one!"

May they will have a good umeboshi this year, too.

Well, go through this path next to the house...

There is Obaachan's field ( the field of the old woman next-door).

She manages this large field by herself.

She is bent with age, so she said,
"Anytime take everything because I can't eat them all.
Not only what you want but also anything bearing high place
I can't reach."

The tomato arch

We have many many many vegitables this time, too.

And then, tempura, of course.
Exellent.

She gave us Kashiwamochi ( "mochi stuffed with red bean paste
and wrapped in an oak leaf).
Both anko(red bean paste) and mochi were handmade.
Thank you, baachan.

Dad also works hard.

My mother's cute herbs are growing well.

The beech ( Buna in Japanese) mom loves is also growing higher.
( And this young tree was named " Bunako". lol. )

Autum, the harvest season, is just around the corner.
Fukushima in the season is also wonderful.

But about the story, I'll tell you sooner or later.

The Second of Fukushima in July ②

I made Azuki cakes for the neighbors
who on both sides of our house,
to thank them for their daily kindness.
This is a healthy cake that my mother taught me,
and not use butter and wheat flour (use rice flour).
My late uncle ate it with great relish.
My memorial cake.

They seemed to not always make a cake by thierselves,
so they were really pleased with it I gave.
" Did YOU make it?! Wow...great!
Hey, it's a handmade cake!!"
The old woman, who live with her chinese daughter-in-law,
said loudly to her, and then,
the chinese woman came out with saying
" Please tell me the recipe!!"in a little Japanese.
I heard that she made chinese manju ( steamed buns) for my parents before.
I want to eat it!! Please make it for me!! And tell me the recipe!!
I haven't talked to her so much yet,
so I'm planning to become a friend with her and ask her
how to make chinese dishes.

When it comes to Fukushima in this season, it's a peach.
Many fresh peaches are seld at Michi no Eki.
I LOVE peaches. But I'm allergic to that.
When I eat peaches, I have to make them well-done.
So my sister made peach jam for me.

She made it with a little sugar,
I can enjoy the real peach taste.
Thank you, sister.

7月の福島・第二弾① the Second of Fukushima in July ①

We have cloudy, rainy and cold days like rainy season these days.
How are you getting along?
I avoided writing English because it's painstaking work for me,
but I went to Fukushima last week and
want to tell you about the story.
So, I'm sitting in front of my PC to write this.
I'm sorry about my poor English. GANBARIMASU.
As I took many pictures in Fukushima this time,
they are expected to be uploaded several times.
If you have time, please take a look at them.

The discount fare of expressway ended last month,
so we (me and my sister) use Tohoku expressway
together with route 4 to get to Fukushima
taking 4 hours from Saitama.
On our way to Fukushima,
we can drive by turns and comfortably
having a splended view from a car.
So I feel 4 hours pass quickly.
This picture is Abukuma highland road (and Elmo).
After all routes opened,
this road had been really damaged by
the great earthquake and
the repair have not been finished yet.
The surface of the road is uneven still now.

We left Saitama at morning and
got to Ono town in Fukushima at noon.
When I met my parents,
I felt relieved at their cheerful face.
Then we went to our favorite ramen shop for lunch.
Handmade tya-shu (roast pork) and
a soft-boiled egg are perfect.

Soft ice cream at Hirata "Michi no Eki"
(Station of Road. It's like a marketplace.
Many local goods, vegetables and fruits are sold.
Michi no Eki is also popular as a tourist spot.)
This soft ice cream is really good.
I always eat it when I come here.
The soft ice cream shop was built recently
and the variety of ice cream increased.
I knew Egoma (a kind of sesami...maybe) soft ice cream,
but green asparagus taste was first time I heard.
The appearance is amusing.
An asparagus is thrusted into light green soft ice cream.
I couldn't understand whether it is a real fresh asparagus or not.
A 4 people family were there and
everyone ate the ice cream.
So my mother said to me,
"why don't you ask them if you take a picture of their ice creams?"
But......I couldn't.
Well, then, next time I'll eat ... Nah, impossible.
I'm so sorry.

24, July.
In Ono town, now is the best season for hydrangea.
I saw many hygrangeas blooming beautifully
here and there at this town.

My father is making bamboo fence
along the slope leads to the porch.
The next-door neighbor have a mountain,
and he told her about his plan of making a fence,
then she said he can take bamboos from her mountain.
So my father went out cheerfully,
but he got lost and panicked.
Before long, he fell down at the back of
an aquaintance's house
and, as if nothing happened,
nodded to someone in the house,
and passed a barking dog and the garden.
  Oh...dad...

A small topic about a meal in Fukushima

Tsuyu (the rainy season) is over in Tohoku after Kanto.
Summer has come at last.
But it was faster than usual,
so I'm concerned about the earth's health.

And 4 months have passed since the disaster occurred.
But still now, many many people
have lived in places of refuge,
and there is no end to the problems about
the nuclear power plant accidents.
The more I think about that,
the more anger and sorrow well up within me.
At the same time, my shoulders droop in disappointment
at my own powerlessness.

All I can do now is
to tell people the good stories about Tohoku.
Though I know only Fukushima,
and that is just a little part of there,
I want to send something about that with my messages.

(It is natural to save electricity.
I wonder why we did't ever do it !)

So, I'm going to write about my life in Fukushima,
with small daily topics.
Please join me, if you have time.

Now, this time is the rest of the last one.
The meal.

Soramame (fava bean, broad bean) and
Endoumame (Green peas)
that my dad harvested at his field.

We ate them for supper,
Mame-gohan (beans rice),
Namul (a Korean dish of seasoned vegetables),
and Katsuo-no-tataki (chopped raw bonito) that
we roasted over an irori fire (an open hearth set into a floor).
But I did't do it... I was just hanging around
to take some pictures of that.
It was a wonderful supper!!

The picture of roasting bonito by straws.
The good smell of smoke was in the air.

A popular meal of Ono town in Fukushima,
Tyuka-soba (a chinese noodle) of a diner "Sendaiya".
It's a plain taste but the big amount!!
I'm always full and my stomach scream when I eat it.
But a small old woman next to me eat up all in a flash.
Wow... you win, Ma'am.

.....oh, there's no picture left.
Oh, my god!! I thought I have more!!
Made a mistake. I will take many pictures next time.
Adios.

The yard

June, 26. I went to Fukushima.
This is a picture of Tanbo ( rice field ) I took in front of my parents' home.
             It's a beautiful green sight.
THIS is the good view of countryside in Japan and it heals our hearts.

This is a view from the yard.
The flower is Sharanoki ( or Natzutzubaki in Japanese,
Japanese pseudocamellia in English). Finally, I could see them this time.
I love white, soft, and big flowers like them or Russell prairie gentian.
You can see my father's field at the bottom of this picture.
He said "you plant something",
and set the one third of this site aside for my sister and me.

This is downy cherryies.
I'm afraid of eating them because of my cherry allergy,
but I heard that their tastes are like cherry.
I always enjoy to see them in yogurt for breakfast,
and then I give them to someone of my family.
Though I love fruits, I'm allergic to some fruits.

The new flower bed.
It will be filled with herbs.
That is Rosemary that been planted already.
It got through the last winter, so it might be strong to grow.
Dad set the trees very well, that he cut down in the back yard.
I'm really looking forward how the flower bed will change.

Long time no see!!

I'm so sorry but only in Japanese this time. Thank you.

I will try to write this blog also in English from next time...maybe, yes :P

Smile

April,22
I did volunteer work in former Kisai high school for people who evacuated from Futaba-machi, Fukushima.
As a member of Starbucks Coffee Japan, we treated them to hot coffee. It was a very cold day so they seemed to be really happy to drink hot one. Men and women of all ages enjoyed our coffee, and I was glad to see that.
I think that there are sad, angry, disappointed feeling of bottom of their hearts. But they've never showed it to us. They were smiling, laughing all the time. I was really surprised and felt my heart warming. I'm sure that they are the one who should be respected.
This volunteer work gave me some power of smile. Just smile, we can change the atmosphere, someone's feeling, and also ourselves. Just smile...
